Filmmaking today is so much different than it was even a decade ago that it can be hard to keep track with the latest methods and practices. The best way to sum it all up, though, is that life for independent and amateur filmmakers has become simpler, thanks in large part to technology. You may hear a lot about editing programs such as Final Cut Pro, or even something a bit more obscure, such as filmmakers using advanced file sharing programs like Share File to exchange and edit material. But in addition to these types of programmers, people interested in film can also take advantage of something much simpler: electronic apps.

It seems that these days just about everyone you meet has either a smart phone or a tablet device, and these electronics come equipped to download an incredible range of apps and programs geared toward every hobby, profession and practice in existence. So, here are 5 such apps that are particularly useful for independent and amateur filmmakers.

1. iMovie

If you have any interest in filmmaking , you likely know at least a bit about the iMovie program on Apple computers, which is essentially the ready-made film cutting and editing program. The app is an extension of this program that gives you a basic but really quite impressive way of filming, editing, and uploading decent quality videos all from your iPhone or tablet device.

2. Movie Slate

Movie Slate is essentially a digital clapboard that can be downloads easily to your smart phone or tablet. Take notes, create a shot log, and compile footage in an easy and organized fashion with access to this app, and without spending money on an actual clapboard!

3. Final Cut Pro Field Guide

Final Cut Pro is a necessary tool for students of film in today’s world, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to use right off the bat. It can be learned – at least the basics can be – fairly quickly, but complications still arise, and that’s when the Field Guide app can come in handy. This app even provides you with Final Cut shortcuts and access to other resources helpful in film editing.

4. Storyboard Composer

You may have created a storyboard before, but without this app you likely haven’t done it on a phone or tablet device. The convenience of a digital storyboard composer in your pocket can be an invaluable tool for anyone from a screenwriter to a filmmaker or director.

5. Sun Scout

This one is a bit more of a gimmick, but it’s still a useful tool for people who like to shoot film on their own. Sun Scout essentially predicts lighting and shadows in a location through the day, allowing you to have an accurate feel for filming conditions.
